From F1TimeWiki
The Design area of the factory is where your designer and their team of engineers work hard to improve the race car. The Designer’ skill, speciality, and contract details are listed on the left.
Designer
| At the beginning of the game you will have a randomly assigned Designer to lead the car development. Their skill reflects the number of hours you can assign to improve the car. You can add to this by hiring more engineers. Improving a part that is the designer's speciality will give better results than other parts of the car.
Designer contracts can not be extended. When the number of races on your Designer’s contract is 17 (length of one full season) or less you will have to go to the Designers Market and hire a new one. If you fail to sign a new Designer by the end of the season you will be given a random Designer with a salary of one million dollars per race for the following season.

Design orders
| Between each race you set orders for your design team to work on improving the components of the car. How you distribute the hours is completely up to you except that you must place a minimum of 1 hour on each part of the design. You can focus on one area or many, but there is always the possibility that by improving a part in one area it may suffer in another.
When you click on a component of the car you can then use your hours to improve:
- Efficiency - improves the speed of your car
- Weight - effects the weight of the part
- Space - is the amount of room the part takes up in your factory
- Cost - controls the price to build the part

Once you have submitted your design hours they can not be undone. |
Design weight
The design weight reflects the overall weight of your car. It is based on the current supplier revisions, the driver and miscellaneous parts (which are always 100 kg), and the design team's current car. Because of this, your actual current race car's weight may vary depending on the parts fitted.
|
The minimum weight your car can be for a race is 600 kg without fuel. If your car is any lighter it will be ballasted up to 600 kg for the race. |
Additionally, there is a minimum allowed limit to the weight of every part in F1TIME. A part after the reset can not be below 80% of its initial default weight. Any part, that after the reset is still below this value, is automatically raised to 80% of the default weight.
