Before each race, you may drive up to 15 warm up laps. You must drive multiple laps at once, but you will not get any setup feedback on the first and last lap (slow in and out laps) of each stint. Due to the in and out laps you need to drive stints that that are a minimum of 3 laps each, but you can do all 15 at once if you choose to do so. Unlike practice, you will get feedback about how much fuel you have left after each lap.

You can also use this as an opportunity to test different tyre compounds and fine tune your DRP and setup.

Once you drive a warm up lap, you can not drive anymore practice laps, even if you had practice laps left.

Warm up laps

Other than the addition of having to include the number of laps to complete for each stint and the in and out laps, warm up works identical to practice.

Fuel usage

Warm up is the only time during the race weekend that you have an opportunity to check the fuel consumption of your engine for the race. For each warm up lap you will be informed the amount of fuel, in Litres to one decimal place, used to complete the lap. The out and in laps, from and to the pits, the driver will cruise around. Be aware this will effect the consumption significantly for those laps.

In F1TIME fuel weight is 0.75 kg per Litre of fuel.[clarification needed]

Warm up tips

There are a few things to remember when doing warm up:

  • You can complete up to 15 warm up laps in groups of 3 or more laps.
  • Set your fuel and lap numbers. (You can only do stints of 3 or more laps, though 3 is probably not a great idea for determining average fuel usage per lap.)
  • The speed of the car affects fuel consumption.
  • The driver goes slower on his untimed in & out laps, this will also affect fuel consumption.
  • You need to measure how much fuel your warm up laps use and determine the amount of fuel needed per lap.
  • Some longer laps consume a lot of fuel, so the 10 L default fuel may not be enough to do all the laps you select.
It is far better to finish a race with 10-20 L extra fuel than run out of petrol. As you gain experience you can reduce the fuel buffer with more confidence.
